Island Vacation Skirt – tip #1: Matching scenery or stripes

September 22, 2019 by Judy

The Island Vacation skirt has scenery on it … it has a yellow sunset on the horizon, a line of purple mountains, and then the ground, before it explodes into poppies. The skirt has 3 separate pieces in order for it to wrap around, and you’ll want an unbroken line of horizon to go around the waist and hips. So, you’ll want to lay out the 3 pattern pieces to ensure that when you cut them out, the seam lines will be sewn together at the right points to allow the horizon line to continue unbroken. Do this using the notches on the side seams. I laid the two pieces (left front and right front) next to each other and lined up the notches by measuring the distance from the top of the fabric down to both notches. It needs to be the same. Then also be sure to lay the pieces “straight” by lining up the grainline arrows (shown on the pattern piece) with the straight grain of the fabric. You should be all set then to pin the pattern to the fabric and cut it out.

You can test the success by cutting out ONE piece first (left front for example), then laying it on top of the right front, matching notches. Note whether the horizon is aligned across both pieces and if not, adjust the uncut pattern piece.
