Valentine’s Placemat

January 20, 2015 by Judy

So, you know, Valentine’s Day is almost here. You would like to do something for your family, but what? Candy, well, it’s over done and no one wants the added calories.
How about placemats for everyone? They don’t even have to be out of the same fabric. Everyone’s could be different. This placemat is so easy.
Here’s how to do it:
Cut 2 pieces of fabric, one for front, one for back that are 14 inches by 16 inches.
Decide which on is the front.
Cut a rectangle 4 1/2 inches wide by 30 inches long for the outside pocket. Cut another one, same size, for the lining of the pocket.
Lay the pocket pieces right sides together. At one end, fold them in half and snip from the outside edges toward the inside, cutting off the corners, creating a point at the end of the two pieces of fabric. It should look like the flap of an envelope.
Stitch these right sides together, leaving an opening for turning.
Turn right sides out. It should look like a long rectangle with a point at the end. Press.
Fold this strip up onto itself, creating a pocket with a flap, as shown in the photo.
Pin to the 14 X 16 inch rectangle about 1 1/2 inches in from the edge. Stitch this to the rectangle on 3 sides leaving the flap free.
Layer this top piece with batting and the back rectangle and quilt. Bind in your favorite method.

You can add a cloth napkin too!
